10-31. I went looking for info on Biboonikeonini and found this lovely piece about celebrating stars and dark sky places, Indigenous star knowledge, and stewardship of the night sky: https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/northern-nights-starry-skies.htm

What a wonderful discovery. Thank you for enlightening us (pun intended). Would love to have been able to view that exhibit, and possibly the night time sky up north.

Wonderful, in every literal sense of the word!

The world needs more this: "2025_1030: Eleven years on and well grayed myself, I feel I understand the burdens my father carried better than ever." And it fascinates me that it comes the day after something the world needs less of. Does the thing we need less of leave us open to the thing we need more of?

About to encounter that long-overdue-trip-to-the-gym feeling as I trundle into the Uni's rec center for the first time since knee replacement 6 weeks ago. Leg day will be different for a while:) I think I can feel it already, and I'm nowhere near the gym.

Say, did you happen to attend the Fire in the Mountains metalfest in Browning last summer? I read about it in this month's HCN - https://www.hcn.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/HCN-1-52-LowRes-November-2025.pdf

(Let me know if this hits a pay wall AND you have interest. I'll send it as an attachment.)

The story is astounding. And I was humbled and stoked to see a former student involved with the launching of this event. Seems like it'll be back in Browning again next summer. Kinda high dollar, but maybe it could be done reasonably, excepting the ticket prices. But then again, the more money, the better for the supported programs.

My English ed students (training to be high school English teachers) just posted their first month of one-sentence journals. Stoked to read them w/ students in class tomorrow. Thanks for this mojo. It's great at getting them(*us) on the writing path. Cheers, -Nigel

I knew about it but didn’t attend. It happened I think a week or so before IPFEST and we were deep into final preparations.

Oh, right. I’ll bet that was 24-7 get er dun time. Stoked to hear the details for IPFEST ‘26.

The article is beautiful. The writer knows what’s going on in a lot of ways. Peace -Nigel

As a new reader, this is my first introduction to your One-Sentence Journal - I'm intrigued. Especially as I took a peek at days 2025_1003 to 1025_1005 - days and space we shared, from a distance - a little closer during our morning circles. It was a delight to connect your sentences to my own separate experience as I knew exactly where you were under the bridge and amidst the rent-a-cops. When I read aloud those sentences, along with 2025_1029, to visiting friends that I've known for more than 45 years, they looked at me blankly, commented, "yeah, flying is so chaotic," and rushed out the door to be wherever they needed to be. I turned in my chair and stared at the golden, copper trimmed oak leaves glowing through the morning sun in the stillness of the crisp autumn air and realized, as a tear feel on my cheek, they don't know me anymore. They don't understand the deep significance of these words. But I'll share them and the idea of this practice with my new poet, writer, creative friends that have welcomed me into their world for only the last three years, and they will know. (And...I bought your book from the Raven Bookstore in Lawrence on my way home from the conference.)

Amy, I love seeing you here! I also love that you stopped at Raven Bookstore, as I made a little pilgrimage there myself. ❤️

Just reading of your travels makes me anxious about the amount of trips I have already scheduled for next year. All for good and dear reasons (yearnings?) but I have established a calmer sense of rootedness over the last decade and don’t enjoy the untetheredness as much anymore. Thank for continuously sharing this practice with us.

"A calmer sense of rootedness." I love that.

Chris, I'm grateful to that female cardinal making a welfare check on you on October 3.

Here's a couple from my month:

2025.10.04 -- A large flock of cedar waxwings erupts from a fruit-bearing tree like a longed-for rent in the fabric of reality.

2025.10.19 -- A pile of dark rain clouds along the eastern horizon, backlit by the earliest hint of dawn's coming light, lovingly, if yet deceptively, grants me the momentary illusion that I am, again, living in the tender embrace of mountains.

Favourites: 2025_1013 because I am rediscovering my childhood love for baseball, and, 2025_1031 because my eyes always search for the Wintermaker.

Good to read you again, Chris.

October 29: At Heather Cox Richardson's "Letters from an American," 1,018 readers liked my one-sentence NO KINGS protest sign... "Thanks to Donald Trump, his enablers, MAGA and ICE, I am now aware that there are millions of Americans who would have betrayed Anne Frank."

Savoring your writing with my morning coffee; a ritual I anticipate every month. Thank you.

And -- what happened to 2025_1010??? 😮

Chris La Tray's avatar

I seem to have somehow missed it, didn’t I? I didn’t even notice.

What a gift for us to have some deeper than usual October baseball!

Yes! And what a gut punch of an end too. 😫

The 23rd day was outstanding. What a glorious view. What a spectacular combination of earth and sky. Thanks for the transportation to a special time and place.

It was storming like crazy when I rolled into Moab, then it cleared up and I was astounded by what I discovered when I took a short trip up into Arches.
