Oh Chris, we are so excited to be buried in pre-orders for this book (it has already begun) and to see the fruition of all of your hard work. All the F-ers at F&F love you and want to share that love with the world.
Huge congrats on this, though I imagine it's a bittersweet feeling to put so much personal and raw history out into the maw of the world.
Fact & Fiction was a vital bookstore for me both of my rounds living in Missoula, and I still aim to get back to it if I'm ever in the area. I've ordered copies for my sister (still in Missoula) and me. We're both from Choteau, as I think I mentioned to you by email a year or so ago. I've spent a long time slowly learning about the Indigenous history of that area and I am so very much looking forward to reading your book. Everything I read just points to us all having so much more to learn. (If you're at all interested in a visit/reading in either Choteau or Laramie, WY, where I live right now, please say so. I will happily work on making that happen. I bring a lot of speakers/authors to Laramie, so I am pretty confident we can do it!) Meanwhile, I'll be telling everyone else I know in Choteau to get this book pre-ordered pronto!
I've spent a lot of time in Choteau with Al Wiseman. I've just exchanged messages this week with the folks putting on the annual Michif Heritage Keepers Festival happening there June 7-9 and I'll be there for that, hopefully with finished books in hand. And Laramie, yes! I plan to get in that area for sure!
Wonderful you'll be going there. I'm hoping to get back to Choteau for that festival, but I can't do it this year. I'll make sure my family and friends know you're coming. You've probably spent a lot more time with Al than I ever got to. But he remains a really special part of my sense of belonging in that valley. I was grateful for the time he did share. As for Laramie, alright!!! If you want to chat more specifics and/or if you don't already have travel support for getting down here, I can follow up by email!
YAY!!!! Chris, it is a stunning cover and it will be a handsome addition to my library. It’s important to see ourselves out in the world in the current day and age. Take up all the space. We need it more than ever.
I can’t wait to read this and BRAVO to all of your hard work, determination, and doing it all with some much kindness and grace.
"When I step back and not look at it as my face, I see the faces of my ancestors and I like it." Thank you, Chris, for those words to remember when it comes to the discomfort of visibility and self-promotion with stories that need to be told. Was thrilled to place an order when I stumbled upon the F&F preorder link a few days ago. Already scheming about folks to gift the book to so I can keep adding to that sweet flood of preorders!
Congrats Chris! Infriggincredible actually! Pre-ordered, and I love that picture of you and your self-promotion qualms too. And your Irritable Métis blog is always a flare in the dark. Thanks!
Preordered from the store in Missoula. Very much looking forward to this. Excavating the stories of we really are as opposed to what we have been told is something I have been interested in since I was about 10.
Well done! This is an important piece of work that I can't WAIT to read. Your book is now a part of history, and while this moment when the book is being officially published is fantastic, the impact it will have on future generations is likely incalculable. Your hard work will be remembered!
So very hyped to read your story in the form of this book! I hope it’s been a healing, or enlightening, or empowering, or en-much-ening experience for you to write about such a throughline of your whole life, in a way that coheres differently from blog posts or poetry. I’m glad there’s a map, too - it’s beautiful, as you noted, and I know it will be helpful for me as a visual/spatial person.

Yay!! Ordering it as a surprise gift for my husband, Charley. Of course, from your home-away-from-home local bookstore there in Missoula.

✊🏽
Chris, I'm so glad pub date is really here! I so so hope you'll come through Colorado's western slope to read--our valley would love to hear from you.
Front Range area too, please!
Yes!
You're on my list, Emily! I really hope to get out your way before next winter.
