Amazing writing. You put into words what so many of us think. Coming from cold country, your thoughts about sadness seeing warm weather return next week resonates, as does seeing Montana on world news as evidence. Thank you for this. I'm literally going outside now to ensure the bird feeders are full.

Thanks, Ed. The birds will thank you for it!

Looking forward to getting the vaccine someday. Love the outer space idea! I’ve been watching the trial and trying not to cry.

Just sat for a break [for my old bones] while working about the house, read your post, which, by the way, gives me a smile, because I am like-minded way up here in hinterland Alaska.

I so much agree with you, but, yet, this just confirms that I can still do *my* part by continuing to wear a mask or two even though mandates are changing [seemingly because we now have a vaccine]. Our Daily News just published information about our mandates which seem to be headed in the same direction as Montana's.

I cannot take the vaccine. I'm doing my part to keep myself and others safe from falling ill due to COVID and/or influenza. I truly believe that going outdoors [even though we are experiencing sub-zero temperatures as always in January/February] keeps me healthy.

Be well, be safe, Chris. Keep on writing, and I shall keep on reading you!!

I hope your use of HTFU meant "harden the fuck up." And winters were longer when we were young. Snow was plentiful. Or, at least, that's how I remember it. Then again, when we are small, everything seems big. I remember snow drifts that went over my head. Anyway... the no masks when the CDC says two masks is maddening. Our now very red state is in a world of hurt (for many reasons). Thanks for capturing the mood as perfectly as ever.

You are correct about HTFU, Angie. Ha ha.

Exactly what I needed today, feeling suffocated by the idiocy of Gianforte's mask rhetoric and the kind of actions that will further enable. I made sure to fill the bird feeder outside my window before this cold snap, and reading this brings me the same sense of gratitude as watching the finches and nuthatches and chickadees take turns at the feeder. Thank you.

That's the holy trinity of adorable little birds that I look for too, Sarah. What a joy.

I was texting with a local friend this mornin who's an ICU nurse who volunteered for the Covid unit last spring and just lamenting how horribly disappointing many things still are. The selfishness and ignorance combined and how many people it hurts. But you're right, we don't have to suck. (Also, kudos to that person who messaged you over Twitter. Still super happy about your vaccine! And news that we might all have a shot much sooner than expected.)

I have a few friends in the healthcare industry and I've heard similar. What a drag.

I know nothing about your leader, except to say that if you are for the living planet, they all suck at their root. It's just a matter of which sucks harder. Personally, i believe in honoring God, and my God is the living planet. I have therefore never enjoyed political representation. I don't even have a country, for that matter. As far as i am aware.

I'm with you on the cold thing. It's been -40 with windchills here, which it's entirely possible to comfee in if you dress properly. And the rituals, yes, including the rituals occasioned by the horse waterer freezing-up, the wellhouse freezing-up, the bathtub freezing-up. Cutting wood and feeding the fire, for sure. I do feel for the livestock, that's where i find this cold tedious. But i've felt worse. We had -50 windchills on our previous farm on the plains on the plains one day and at Swift Current and Peace River on two separate occasions i experienced -60. Now THAT left me wondering how anything was left alive when it passed.

So many things to be upset about...so many small things to be thankful for💕

I was going to ask about your Mom hoping she was doing fine—good for you helping her get the vaccine. And also glad you received a tip!

I’m on the signup merry-go-round, I was upset two weeks ago but not much I can do but keep trying. That’s the curse of being a healthy person!

Good read. Happy about your vaccine. I get mine next week. I'm still feeding hummingbirds here in western Washington, but later this spring I head back to Montana for my summer seasonal tourist roundup gig. I'm always concerned that Gianforte will attain high office where he can inflict his vacuum-brained ideas on a larger population. Case in point, the idea that people shouldn't retire because retirement isn't mentioned in the bible, and that Noah built an ark when he was 600 years old. He sure makes Bullock sound smart.
