Mashkode biishiki!

Happy Birthday, Chris. Have renewed my subscription for another year. Trying to remember how I discovered your Substack several years ago. I've determined that I can only afford one paid Substack subscription per year. I'm choosing An Irritable Metis from here on out.

Happy birthday, Aries! Just made another gift to Chickadee Community Services (I think I matched $1 for every year of your life then rounded up for good measure 😆). Thank you for continuing to beat the drum for those scholarships to get Indigenous folks out on the Salmon with you this summer—I'm thrilled to try to help make that happen in my own small way.

Your April 21 event with Melissa Kwasny and Sean Hill at our library in Helena is on my calendar and I'm bringing a small gift to hand off to you. I might just make that week a double-shot of CLT with the Carroll event.

Happy Birthday! I donated what I could and I am spreading the word in my corner of the digital world. Is there any way to track -- public radio style -- how close to/ far from your goal you are? It might help encourage people to see the jar fill up as it were

If you do this, I want to be your first subscriber: "I’ve been thinking about writing a newsletter as an open letter to folks in conservation, outfitters, fishing guides, et al, because their opportunities to make a living is on the backs of people who lost everything. The efforts to preserve “public land” is also an effort to (continue to) keep it out of the hands of Indigenous people too." I need to hear voices like yours to keep my work as honest as I can.

Happy Birthday! Yesterday I noticed on my walk through our island forest that the alder suddenly went from swollen buds to that incomparable spring green, joining the snowberry and the Indian plum. Still soaked by winter rains, the licorice fern are continuing to creep up the moss covered trunks and branches of the big leave maples. Another trip around the sun means I get to be here for this cycle of growth and retreat and being able to walk through it is, well, the quietest joyful part of any day for me. I hope you get restorative time this year in your patch of wildness. (And thank you for the scholarship program reminder, meant to, didn't, etc.)

I took spent coffee grounds out to the compost bin; they steamed in the wind from the lake.

Snowflakes like cold white daisies rode in, clinging, melting.

A squirrel paused, its tail beaded with the damp; where, in April, had it found an old apple?

Behind it, the spring's first tulip sent up an orange-red flare.

Wishing you many happy returns of the day, spring mornings, coffee, squirrels, snow, and flowers.

Happy (very belated) birthday, Chris! I've missed reading your words. Although I'm not in the position to donate, I will likely be able to do so closer to June, and would love to do so if it won't be too late!

Your dedication to creating meaningful opportunities for Indigenous individuals is truly commendable! It’s inspiring to see your efforts in making such impactful experiences accessible. I'm curious, how do you hope these workshops will influence the participants' perspectives or actions in their communities?
